Oki/Tansi Kindergarten Families, I know it has been a while since I updated our blog, we have just been so busy in room 21! We started November off by learning about what Remembrance Day is and why we acknowledge it. Students learned about the meaning of peace, the symbols that represent it, and how it can be created in our classroom. We also spent time recognizing the contributions of indigenous soldiers to the Canadian war effort. Throughout the last 2 months we have also been working on creating, duplicating and extending patterns. We began by sorting a variety of objects using different sorting rules such as colour, size, and shape. Understanding these sorting rules develop a better understanding of rules within in patterns. Students are able to explain what rule a group of objects is sorted by and what rule a pattern is following. Kindergarten is so fortunate to have Ms. Sheena with us and moving forward she will be teaching us how patterns are incorporated into beautiful beadwork. Many of you had the joy of watching our Kinder's Winter Solstice performance this month, they were so proud of their work. We practiced and rehearsed everyday from the beginning of November up until the big day to make our song perfect. Ms. Sheena and Iikiinayookaa helped us translate the colours in our song into Blackfoot and our grade 6 buddies assisted in making our costumes. We truly appreciated the team effort. Kindergarten also got to go on its first field trip this year! We were fortunate enough to have Ms. Tracy organize a trip to the Central Library where we got to visit their Indigenous center, visit with an Elder, and checkout the library's book sorting machine!
