Ms. Nadia Oki Kindergarten families! I hope everyone has been safe and healthy this past week. I have missed my kindergarteners so much! The classroom was so quiet and lonely without them. However, I want to highlight the amazing work we have been doing prior to Spring Break! After our return from the winter break we really kicked it into high gear in room 21. We began to some new winter themed table centers which allowed us to practice our writing, story-telling, fine motor, counting, and patterning skills. Kindergarteners practiced these centers for most of January and February. I was so proud of how hard each student worked and how much growth they experienced while working on these centers. Take a look at some of our activities! In January we also began beading necklaces to give as gifts to our guests for the Beaver Bundle opening which happened February 8th. Ms. Sheena taught us how to make a floral design necklace and the students chose the patterns they wanted on their necklaces. This task developed strong patterning skills and understanding in our students. We began our necklaces by planning them out in our visual journals and then finding the beads that matched the colours we wanted. Check out the hard work! We have also committed to spending time learning on the land this winter. We were fortunate enough to have Ms. Danica join us on our nature walks each Wednesday where kindergarteners got to explore nature and the community around us. We looked for shapes in nature, colours, counted trees, learned how to tell if a tree was old or young, what evidence we can see of animals in our community, and simply took the time to just listen to the earth and the sounds we hear outside. If you are interested in working with your kindergarten student at home here is a link to suggestions and resources the CBE has put together for families:
https://cbe.ab.ca/programs/curriculum/learning-at-home/Pages/k-6.aspx Please have a restful and enjoyable spring break, take care of each other, and stay healthy! Love, Ms.Nadia Oki/Tansi Kindergarten Families, I know it has been a while since I updated our blog, we have just been so busy in room 21! We started November off by learning about what Remembrance Day is and why we acknowledge it. Students learned about the meaning of peace, the symbols that represent it, and how it can be created in our classroom. We also spent time recognizing the contributions of indigenous soldiers to the Canadian war effort. Throughout the last 2 months we have also been working on creating, duplicating and extending patterns. We began by sorting a variety of objects using different sorting rules such as colour, size, and shape. Understanding these sorting rules develop a better understanding of rules within in patterns. Students are able to explain what rule a group of objects is sorted by and what rule a pattern is following. Kindergarten is so fortunate to have Ms. Sheena with us and moving forward she will be teaching us how patterns are incorporated into beautiful beadwork. Many of you had the joy of watching our Kinder's Winter Solstice performance this month, they were so proud of their work. We practiced and rehearsed everyday from the beginning of November up until the big day to make our song perfect. Ms. Sheena and Iikiinayookaa helped us translate the colours in our song into Blackfoot and our grade 6 buddies assisted in making our costumes. We truly appreciated the team effort. Kindergarten also got to go on its first field trip this year! We were fortunate enough to have Ms. Tracy organize a trip to the Central Library where we got to visit their Indigenous center, visit with an Elder, and checkout the library's book sorting machine! What a busy first couple months we have had. Kindergarteners have been developing a variety of skills such as; learning to cooperate, share, build friendships, be safe, play, and discover what it is like to be in school. We have also been working on our literacy and math skills by starting with writing our name, reading books using pictures to tell our story, sorting objects by colour and size, counting collections, and exploring shapes in our world. September also included discussions on why we acknowledge Orange Shirt Day. We read several books that explained to us how students felt when they attended residential school and how we feel coming to school. Some of the adjectives students used to describe how they feel at school were; happy, safe, calm, brave, and excited. Kindergarten also joined the school in celebrating Canadian hero, Terry Fox. We discussed how Terry Fox was different from a super hero and what it means to be a hero in real life. Students participated in the Terry Fox run around the school field to honour this Canadian hero.
